Depending on the situation, students can understand when to use formal or informal expressions. 09:00-12:30 | In this course, students will explore Korean traditional and contemporary music cultures and scenes. Topics will vary from traditional Gugak to recent music genres, including K-pop, indie music, experimental music scenes, trot, and film music. Students will look into sociological contexts, compositional ideas, and performance practices through weekly lecture, group discussion, listening, reading, and creative activities. |

09:00-12:30 | Empowering techniques to Manage, People, Projects, and Innovation will develop the key interpersonal management and communication skills and understanding in order to confidently and successfully function in a school or business environment using time and self-management, active listening, facilitation, and motivational criticism techniques. This is not a lecture course. This is a student-centered participation course so students should be comfortable communicating in English. Students will learn: how to understand the current management environment, how to manage time and emotions effectively, how to listen like a manager, how to resolve conflicts, how to manage projects, how to create quality new ideas, how to sell a good idea, how to get buy-in. |

14:30-18:00 | The purpose of this course is for the students to apply theoretical knowledge acquired during this summer semester. During the project, students engage in the entire process of solving the real-world problems from collecting and processing actual data along with suitable and appropriate analytic methods to the problem. Both the problem statements and the datasets originate from real-world domains similar to those that students might typically encounter within industry or academic research. |

09:00-12:30 | Buddhism has played a major role in the Korean thought and culture since its transmission at around the 5th century CE. In order to understand Korean Culture, it is important to understand what Buddhism may be and how it has developed from early to modern period. This lecture surveys Buddhist thought and culture from the ancient India to the modern Korea to provide the general picture of Korean Buddhism and the Buddhist culture. It also provides opportunities to visit various Korean Buddhist temples and important museums to experience Korean Buddhist culture and heritage. |
Cultivating Healthy Mind and Body with Meditation (3crs) | Hyeju Sunim |
14:30-18:00 | This course covers a wide spectrum of Buddhist meditation practices, including mindfulness meditation, concentration meditation, and Seon (Zen/Chan). Students will learn how to approach Buddhist meditation practices and explore how to practice them. By learning to understand their selves and interconnectedness among all beings, students will be able to observe how their mind works and explore how to live in harmony with all other beings with healthy and compassionate mind. This course will also discuss the global movement of meditation practices and the benefits of practicing meditation for well-being. Students will learn to apply these meditation practices to their daily lives. |

Comparative Criminal Justice System and Practices (3crs) |

09:00-12:30 | The course is designed to provide the systematic overview of comparative criminal justice systems (law, police, courts, and corrections) between the U.S.A. and S. Korea. Through a comprehensive comparison and contrast of both countries’ criminal justice systems and practices, this course enables participating students to draw both provincial and universal benefits, leading to more efficient and effective criminal justice systems and practices in each country. |
Grading is based on attendance, class discussion, homework and examination. According to the a regulation, Dongguk University requires a minimum of 80% attendance to receive academic credit. Students are evaluated by ‘PASS’ or ‘FAIL’ (However, a letter grade will be conferred as well upon request)
